Project Overview:

Our client in the Silver Spring neighborhood of Montgomery County, MD, faced significant landscaping challenges on their sloped property. The primary concern was erosion control and water management, which required a comprehensive solution including retaining walls and proper drainage. Additionally, they needed improved access to their shed and vegetable gardens while maintaining an aesthetically pleasing landscape.

Solution:

We implemented a multi-faceted hardscape and drainage solution that transformed the property’s functionality and appearance. The cornerstone of the project was a dry-stacked stone retaining wall system that gracefully managed the property’s elevation changes. The retaining walls, spanning approximately 50 linear feet and reaching heights of 3 feet, were strategically designed to blend into the natural grade.

To enhance property accessibility, we installed two distinct walkways:

  • A Carderock stone path leading to the shed area, carefully constructed with a proper stone dust base for stability.
  • A flagstone stepping stone walkway spanning 50 linear feet, using substantial 36×24″ rectangular stones to accommodate wheelbarrow traffic between the vegetable gardens and shed platform.

We also built a block wall around the shed and a pea gravel patio for the shed to sit on. This preparation allowed another company to install the shed later. Due to the quality of our work on the block retaining wall and pea gravel patio, the client requested us to undertake this additional job.

To address water management concerns, we installed a comprehensive drainage system consisting of:

  • A box drain with approximately 65 linear feet of perforated pipe.
  • Strategic routing under the driveway edge to ensure proper water flow.
  • Careful grading to prevent erosion and manage runoff effectively.

The final touch included the installation of 1,000 square feet of fresh sod, providing a lush, uniform lawn that complemented the hardscape elements while helping with erosion control.

Results:

The completed project delivered a transformed landscape that effectively addressed all the client’s concerns. The dry-stacked stone retaining walls now provide essential erosion control while adding architectural interest to the property. The new walkways created functional access routes throughout the space, while the drainage system effectively manages water runoff. The fresh sod installation completed the landscape renovation, resulting in a beautiful, functional, and well-draining outdoor space that enhances both the property’s value and its usability. The successful addition of the block wall and pea gravel patio further demonstrated our commitment to quality, spurring the client to entrust us with additional work.
