Project Overview:
Our client, a row home owner with a small backyard situated beneath an elevated deck, sought to transform their outdoor space into a stylish and functional area. The existing space was primarily dirt with a few scattered plants, and the client desired a more refined look. Their main objectives were:
- Install wall-to-wall pavers throughout the backyard, excluding the area around an existing tree.
- Create a black and white checkerboard pattern with the pavers.
- Add a black border around the edges for a polished look.
- Address potential drainage issues, given the space’s location beneath a deck.
Solution:
To meet our client’s needs, we developed a comprehensive plan to revitalize their backyard:
We began by clearing the area of existing plants and preparing the ground, ensuring a level surface for paver installation.
We designed a drainage system that included a slight slope away from the house and incorporated permeable materials to allow water to seep through, addressing the client’s concerns about water accumulation.
We sourced high-quality black and white pavers to create the desired checkerboard pattern, carefully laying them out to achieve a precise and visually striking effect.
A black border was installed around the edges of the paved area, providing a sleek frame for the checkerboard design.
We took special care to work around the existing tree, creating a custom-cut border that allowed for proper tree health and growth while seamlessly integrating with the overall design.
To further enhance drainage, we used polymeric sand between the pavers, which allows water to permeate while preventing weed growth.
Results:
The transformation resulted in a stunning, low-maintenance backyard that perfectly aligned with the client’s vision.
