Project Overview:
Our client, a resident of a charming row home in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, DC, needed to address a rodent issue in their backyard while creating a more functional and inviting space for entertaining. The goal was to enhance the area as follows:
- They wanted a bigger space to enjoy entertaining and family meals since the dining table took up most of the limited space on the existing patio.
- They also wanted some green space to help balance out the new hardscape.
- There were some existing rodent problems, so they wanted a deterrent.
- They wanted an existing “tucked-away” space to be more aesthetically pleasing and repurposed for bicycle storage.
Solution:
We installed a paver patio that acted as an extension of the existing one using the same pavers as used originally, which added a complementary contrast to the bigger picture. This would serve as a stylish and practical foundation for entertaining.
To balance out the hardscape, we performed some landscape design, creating planting beds on either side. With these, we were able to reimagine the placement of plants they already had on the property.
To combat the rodent problem, we reinforced the new planting beds with wire mesh, effectively deterring pests while supporting vibrant plant growth.
Finally, we enhanced the tucked-away bicycle storage space with stepping stones on top of river rock.
Results:
The transformation resulted in a rodent-free, aesthetically pleasing backyard that perfectly met the client’s needs. The new paver patio and protected planting beds, along with the enhanced dining space, turned the backyard into a functional and welcoming environment for family gatherings and entertaining.
